Diabetes is a condition where the sugar in your blood, or glucose, is too high. People who have diabetes cannot easily convert their food to energy which leads to very dangerous problems like stroke, heart disease, blindness, amputation and nerve damage. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. There are also specific conditions, like pregnancy, that can cause temporary diabetes, called gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed when young, but Type 2 diabetes is not diagnosed until adult hood, in most cases.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is also called adult onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is usually caused by a combination of lifestyle and genetics. For instance, if one of your parents had or has Type 2 diabetes, the chances of you getting diagnosed is greater than if neither parent has had it. You are also able to get Type 2 diabetes if you have made poor lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise, unhealthy eating and being overweight. In fact, the typical person who has Type 2 diabetes is almost always overweight.

The typical symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, gum, skin or bladder infections, wounds that will not heal, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. If you suspect diabetes, you should see your doctor and learn how to test for diabetes.

When you go to see your doctor, you are probably wondering how to test for diabetes. There are three main ways to test for diabetes: oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) and random plasma glucose test.

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is more accurate than the FPG test, but it is much hard to both administer and go through. The first part of the OGTT must be done when fasting. A blood sample is taken and then they will drink a very high sugar drink that will be supplied by the doctor’s office or laboratory. This drink, known as “glucola”, has about 75 grams of glucose in it. Blood will be taken at 30 minutes after drinking, an hour after drinking, 2 hours after drinking and 3 hours after drinking. In a person who does not have diabetes, the blood sugar will rise after drinking, but fall sharply in a short amount of time. For someone with diabetes, the blood sugar level will come down much slower. Though the blood will be tested for glucose level each time, it is the 2 hour blood sample that is primarily used for diagnosis.

The most common test for diabetes is the fasting plasma glucose test. It is a very convenient test, is low cost and fairly accurate. There are some types of diabetes, like gestational diabetes, that can be missed by the FPG test.  The FPG test should be done in the morning as fasting is a part of the test. You will need to not eat, drink or smoke for several hours before getting the test done. A normal reading for a FPG test is 99 mm/dL or below. 100 – 125 mm/dL would mean pre-diabetes and any reading over 126 would be positive for diabetes. Usually, if you test over 126, the test will be repeated on another day.

The random plasma glucose test is done at any time, no matter if the person is fasting or not. If the glucose measurement is at 200 mm/dL and a person has increased urination, thirst or unexplained weight loss, it will be considered a positive diagnosis for diabetes.

If you do have diabetes, you will need to check your blood sugar several times a day with diabetes testers or also known as test strips. With better technology, it is easier to use diabetes testers today than it has ever been before. There is a lot of choice on the market, so it is recommended that you find the one that is best for you by trying different choices. Your doctor will be able to give you a recommendation and to teach you how to measure your blood sugar each day. It will be very important, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, that you take care of yourself, change your lifestyle and exercise in order to live a long and healthy life.
